CAMBIARE ISLAND: MAP
19th-Feb-2012 10:52 pm
Cambiare Island is a fully accommodated community, complete with living quarters for recruits, cottages for families, and a large common area that hosts a round-the-clock cafeteria, weight room, general store, and clinic. You are welcome to explore the island, and all of these areas are free to you - except for one. The large, shadowy building deep in the woods behind the common area, known only as the Observational Facility, is a place no recruit wants to go, and those who are taken there for testing often have no recollection of their stay.

Caressed by 330 hectares of lush tropical greenery, at first sight, Cambiare Island is a true paradise that is nestled away in the warm seas of South Pacific. The climate is pleasantly warm and sunny all year round, with average temperatures around upper 70s (F°). From October to March, the weather turns refreshing cool. Some days see more rainfall and stronger winds. Lighter clothing and swimwear are advised most days. In the middle of the island is Cambiare Community Center, a large building with several stories and a full range of necessities. It is conveniently placed between the housing quarters and beach cottages, and is accessible to all recruits at all hours.

Amongst the facilities in Cambiare Community Center are:
- a helipad
- a religious facility, which houses chaplaincy offices and facilities for counseling of individuals or groups
- a gym complete with latest hi-tech equipment, an Olympic size swimming pool, and a kiddie pool
- a medical facility with doctors' offices, emergency and operation rooms, and a small in-patients ward
- a laundry room. All recruits are responsible for washing and drying their own clothes. The linen and bath towels are provided. Cleaning and towels changes – twice a week. Bed linen changes – once a week.
- a mini-mart providing newspapers, magazines, books, laundry detergent, personal hygiene items, snacks, nutritional supplements, alcohol and cigarettes, entertainment and a small selection of clothes (ie. socks, underwear, swimwear).
- a cafe, open 24 hours, that serves a wide range of foods and, at night, functions as a bar to serve alcohol.

To the north of the community center, mostly nestled back against lush trees and forest, are the housing quarters. These are five buildings with four quarters each. Each room provides two bedrooms with single beds, a shared bathroom with shower and bath, a mini-kitchen with mini-fridge and microwave, and a small living area. There are no televisions in these quarters. Instead, recruits are encouraged to go out to the common areas or enjoy time on the beach. Each recruit is provided one laptop that works with the island's intranet, which can be accessed anywhere on the island.

Expectant couples are moved to two-bedroom beach-side cottages, all with private porch and equipped with a master bedroom, kitchen facilities, and fully-furnished nursery. These are on the South side of the island, where the beach sands come up to your front porch, and the clear water is a short walk away. Some might call this the reward you get for participating in the experiment and helping further scientific research. While a full range of complimentary baby food is provided, home-feeding and home made baby food are encouraged. The ingredients are all available from the kitchens, and there are special home cooking classes taught to new parents upon request.

We hope you enjoy your stay at Cambiare Island, and we thank you for participating in our research.
